Remarriage & Divorce-Based Residence Status Support

For Filipino nationals navigating life in Japan after a divorce from a Japanese spouse.

Pinoy Japan Visa Guide specializes in two closely related challenges that often arise together: remarrying under Japanese law after a divorce, and securing the right to stay in Japan through a change to Long-Term Resident (定住者) status.

Who This Is For

  • Filipino nationals who divorced their Japanese spouse and want to remarry a Japanese national in Japan, before the Recognition of Foreign Divorce (ROFD) process in the Philippines is complete
  • Filipino nationals whose residence status needs to change following a divorce from a Japanese spouse, including those raising children in Japan
  • Anyone unsure what happens to their visa status after a divorce

Remarriage Support (Available from Early 2027)

Because Recognition of Foreign Divorce in the Philippines can take a long time, many Filipino nationals who have divorced a Japanese spouse find themselves unable to remarry under Philippine law right away — even though Japanese law allows the remarriage to proceed in Japan. We help prepare the documents and written statement needed for this process.

Available nationwide. Because this service is fully online, we can support you no matter which city or municipality in Japan you live in — this kind of specialized support is hard to find locally in most areas.

Planned fee: ¥120,000

Because this service does not require 申請取次 (Immigration filing authorization), it will be our first service available — shortly after 行政書士 registration is complete (expected December 2026), ahead of our other services.

Change of Status to Long-Term Resident (定住者) After Divorce (From April 2027)

If your residence status was based on marriage to a Japanese national and that marriage has ended, you generally need to change your status of residence. We support the full application, whether or not you have children from the marriage.

Planned fee: ¥119,800 (full service)

This service requires 申請取次 (Immigration filing) authorization, so it will be available from April 2027, alongside our other Immigration-facing services.

Our Other Services

We also support Certificate of Eligibility (COE) applications for couples where the Filipino spouse is still overseas, as well as residence status renewals. For COE pricing, please see our Japanese-language page, since this process is typically handled by the Japanese spouse.

14 Years of Hands-On Experience

From 2008 to 2022, I supported 1,200 international couples as a registered 行政書士, handling the full range of status-based visa matters that Japanese-Filipino couples face — including exactly these situations: remarriage after divorce, and changes of residence status. I understand both the paperwork involved and what Immigration actually looks for.

Currently, I am not registered as a 行政書士, and I share only general information based on this experience.
